FHSA Partners with the International Finance Corporation to Address Food Loss and Waste in Africa

Food Health Systems Advisory (FHSA) partnered with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, to host the IFC x FHSA CEO & Leaders Roundtable and the Food Loss & Waste Management Masterclass in Lagos, Nigeria. These flagship events brought together Africa’s leading agribusiness and food industry professionals to confront one of the continent’s most pressing challenges: reducing food loss and waste.

The CEO & Leaders Roundtable convened top executives from food processing, hospitality, commodities, and agribusiness sectors. Participants engaged in high-level discussions on the hidden costs of food loss, the impact on operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and environmental sustainability. The session provided a unique opportunity for direct engagement with IFC’s Agribusiness Advisory and Investment teams, exploring actionable strategies and investment opportunities.

Following the roundtable, the 2½-day Masterclass empowered senior professionals in sustainability, supply chain, production, quality assurance, catering, and agribusiness with practical frameworks and tools to measure, manage, and reduce food loss and waste. The sessions highlighted real-world business cases, regulatory trends, and circular economy strategies designed to embed sustainable practices into operations.

Globally, around 1.3 billion tons of food are lost or wasted each year, representing nearly a third of all food produced for human consumption. In sub-Saharan Africa, food loss rates remain the highest in the world at 23 percent, underscoring the urgent need for innovative solutions and capacity building across the continent’s food value chains.

FHSA’s work extends beyond advisory services. Through a combination of technical guidance, operational solutions, and program implementation, FHSA helps food businesses optimize processes, strengthen compliance, improve efficiency, and reduce losses. By enabling organizations to translate insights into action, FHSA is driving measurable impact and fostering sustainable growth across Africa’s food sector.
