One-third of the world's food produce is wasted. In Africa alone, the amount of food lost can feed 300 million people. Projected increase in population will lead to increased food production which will require adequate and improved storage facilities to accommodate.

Meanwhile, Nigeria faces challenges with its current storage practices where there is either total lack of, inadequate, or very expensive storage facilities. In order to mitigate food loss and ensure food security, integrating these four components: market linkage for producers, an aggregation of farmers to be exposed to best storage practices, finance and technology is necessary. Improving food storage situation in Nigeria will inevitably require the cooperation of major stakeholders: the government, farmers and the private sector. This article proposes possible solutions to food storage challenges in Nigeria.
